ALS is a serious and progressive neurological disease that so far cannot be cured. Nevertheless, ALS is a treatable disease. The aim of therapy is to slow the disease (neuroprotective therapy) and treat symptoms and disabilities due to ALS (symptomatic therapy). After ALS has been diagnosed, it is appropriate to start neuroprotective therapy.
Established pharmacological therapy with the drug Rilutek is available for this. Later in the course of the disease, symptomatic therapy of swallowing and speech disorders, provision of aids and making decisions regarding non invasive or invasive support of respiratory function become very important.
