With ALS, inpatient treatment may become necessary for different reasons. At the onset of the disease, especially if the diagnosis is uncertain, the wide ranging investigations can necessitate a short admission to our clinic.
However, the most frequent reason for admission is symptomatic treatment of ALS induced dysphagia with a feeding tube. If the dysphagia increases, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) may be necessary. A PEG is placed in the course of a short stay of 3 to 4 days in the neurology clinic.
What has to be done?
Contact your health insurance to check that the costs of inpatient treatment are covered
What should you be aware of?
Drugs that alter blood clotting (e.g. ASA, aspirin, warfarin etc.) must be stopped 7 days before placement of the PEG.
This does not apply to diagnostic admission.
